Funky Food Friday: Ayds

Look, no jokes, here. Obviously, AIDS is serious business.

Which is why it's still so weird to us that there was once a appetite-suppressant that we popped like candy that had the same name, with only a one letter spelling difference.

My mom had her box of Ayds that she kept on a high shelf so that we wouldn't get to them -- of course we did! They were like candy to us; not sure they did anything for Mom other than give her an excuse to ban us from the kitchen for 20 minutes while she unwrapped two pieces to enjoy with a cup of coffee.

Wiki says the active ingredient was BENZOCAINE? Weird.

Once you remember the hysteria over AIDS that gripped us in the early to mid-80's, it's easy to understand how people seriously thought you could get AIDS from eating Ayds. Just like you could get AIDS from a toilet seat, a public swimming pool or being within 100 yards of anyone who looked suspiciously gay...

Oh, I remember these so well! They were supposed to suppress your appetite, but I would eat five or six at a time. I also remember when AIDS effectively killed this product.
