Funky Food Friday: Grape Nuts--ever eat a pine tree?

Last week's Buc Wheats post reminded a bunch of folks of another healthy cereal, this one still around: Grape Nuts!

I kind of like them now, but as a kid I thought it was like eating a bowl of quarry gravel. You too?

But I can't forget this commercial and the million parodies. "Ever eat a pine tree? Many parts are edible, you know."

Also, Euwell Gibbons, like Rula Lenska, was a name that meant nothing to me outside of commercials where we were supposed to know who they were.

And of course, Ms. Rula Lenska (WHO?)

My dad went through a phase where he was really into Euell Gibbons. My mom teased him about this, I guess because so many people made fun of Gibbons (Johnny Carson especially). Gibbons was a naturalist who pioneered the natural/organic food movement; one of the things he advocated was finding and eating plants that grew in the wild (a risky thing to do if you don't know what you're doing). A couple of times my dad gathered up some dandelion leaves and other plants that most people consider weeds, and cooked them up. To everyone's surprise, they were actually pretty good.

Grape Nuts are a fave. I usually eat them slightly soggy - I pour the milk in, drizzle honey all over them, then grab the shower and change. By the time I get back down, they're perfect.

Also excellent on ice cream...
